On the shuttle bus from Honduras over the border to Guatemala were 2 young Belgian girls who were doing volunteer work in Antigua. Once we arrived in the city they kindly walked us to our hostel, along the way offering advice about shops, restaurants, prices etc. We could immediately see why this quaint town is a favourite amongst tourists. Surrounded by 3 volcanoes, with colourful buildings and cobblestoned streets, it reminded us of Granada and Leon.
The German couple, Christa and Sebastiaan, had travelled with us from Copan and we would meet up for a few meals in the days to come. They also joined us on the Friday night when we entered one of the many clubs where Ladies Night meant that Cuba Libres cost only €0,30. That night in the club inspired us to take a salsa lesson which we hope to do in this last month of travelling.
Around the city are numerous shops and stalls- ladies working long hours selling hand made clothing, souvenirs and gifts. In the indoor market was where the competition was most obvious. Every one of the hundred stalls selling the same colourful goods, each prepared to test your negotiating skills. The musicians and men acting as statues in the central park also did their best to try earn some extra cash.
In the few days we were in Antigua we became loyal customers of a well-priced sushi restaurant. Not only was the food incredible but they also gave Geert a sushi lesson, some new ideas for his sushi making back home. From one culinary highlight to the next, Geert spotted the McDonalds in a colonial style building which he 'had to try out'. With tables around the fountain and beautiful big garden at the back, we've voted it the most beautiful McD ever! We found the dessert of all these food highlights at the chocolate museum where, while trying to learn more of the making and history of chocolate, we took advantage of the free tasters they were handing out!

Geert ik kan niet anders bekennen dat die baard je aardig staat. En weer een mooi verslag. De beelden zeggen alles. Ik kan gewoon zien dat jij en Joanne het ontzettend naar de zin hebben. Zoveel mooie en leuke dingen. Genieten van de mooie omgeving, de mensen en het lekkere eten. Niet vergeten alles vastleggen en als je weer terug bent in Nederland gaan we met de heren sushieen.
